Bringing the Spirit of Norway to the Heart of Wisconsin
Sognefjord Winery is more than a place to sip wine — it’s a story that begins generations ago, across the ocean in Norway.

From Fjords to Fields - The Myklebust Legacy
Named after the majestic Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway, our winery honors the Myklebust family legacy that began here in 1959. After serving in WWII, Paal Myklebust immigrated to the U.S. from Hermansverk, Norway, and eventually settled on a farm in Baraboo with his wife, Ragnhild, a Wisconsin Dells native with her own family roots in Norway.
For decades, the Myklebust farm was a place where family gathered, stories were shared, and deep connections were made. Now, Paal and Ragnhild’s granddaughters are turning that legacy into something new — a welcoming winery where community, heritage, and handcrafted wines come together.

Meet Our Wine Maker
Meet Alwyn “Fitz” Fitzgerald — the award-winning winemaker behind every bottle at Sognefjord. With over 15 years of experience, Fitz previously founded Fisher King Winery, has consulted for wineries across Wisconsin, and served on the boards of the Wisconsin Grape Growers Association and Wisconsin Winery Association.
His passion and expertise shine through in every pour, and we’re lucky to have him on the team. Skål!

Behind the Pour
Get to know the little details and big stories that make Sognefjord Winery unique.
What’s in a Name?
Sognefjord (pronounced SOHN-yeh-fyord) is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway and the childhood home of our family’s patriarch, Paal Myklebust.
What Does “Skål” Mean?
“Skål” is a Scandinavian toast and it means “cheers” and is used to celebrate good times and great company. You'll hear it a lot around here.
65+ Years on the Farm
Our winery sits on the same land the Myklebust family has called home since 1959 and yes, some of the original buildings are still here.
Our Winemaker is Kind of a Big Deal
Fitz (aka Alwyn Fitzgerald) has won gold medals at international wine competitions and served on the boards of major Wisconsin wine associations.
